
Why Your Bathroom Heater Actually Needs to be Waterproof
Let’s be honest: most of those old-school heat lamps in bathrooms are pretty useless. They leak, they struggle with the steam, and half the time you’re still shivering while you’re trying to get ready. That’s why we’ve been moving toward waterproof infrared heaters. They just make more sense for the way a bathroom actually works. It’s about the heat, not the air Here is the thing about traditional heaters: they try to warm up the air. But bathrooms are usually drafty, and that warm air just floats away or disappears the second you open the door. Infrared is different. Instead of fighting the air, it sends out waves that hit you—and your skin—directly. It feels like stepping into a patch of sunlight on a cold day. We use short-wave emitters because they work almost instantly. No waiting around for the room to “warm up.” You turn it on, and you feel it. Simple. The battle against steam Water and electricity are a nightmare pairing. In a steamy shower environment, moisture finds a way into everything. If it hits the wiring, the whole thing burns out. You can’t just put a plastic cover over a regular heater and call it a day. That doesn’t work. We use high IP ratings, which is basically a fancy way of saying we seal the connections tight and use gaskets that actually keep the moisture out. The goal is to stop steam from condensing on the internals before it causes a short. The tricky parts We usually go with quartz glass or ceramic coatings. Quartz is great because the heat passes right through it, but it’s fragile. If you’re putting these in a busy spot, make sure the mounting bracket is rock solid. One good bump and quartz can crack. And a quick heads-up: these things put out a lot of intense heat in one spot. If you pick a unit that’s too powerful for a tiny ceiling, you might actually scorch your drywall. Just make sure you leave enough breathing room around the unit. Getting it installed The good news is that these usually drop right into the spot where your old lamp heater lived. You can use the existing wiring, but do me a favor—check your breakers first. Infrared elements can have a bit of a surge when they first kick on, and you don’t want to trip the power the first time you try to get warm.
