
Fixing the Heat Headache in KHS Blow Molding Lines
Ever pull a batch of PET bottles off the line only to find they look “pearly” or the walls are thin in some spots and thick in others? It’s frustrating. Usually, it comes down to one thing: your preforms aren’t heating evenly. When the heat is off, the stretch ratio fails. We see it all the time. OEM lamps start to degrade, the heat field shifts, and suddenly your quality control is a nightmare.
The nitty-gritty of heat
If you’ve got cold spots, you need a lamp that actually hits its wattage mark. Here’s the thing: a standard quartz halogen tube is a delicate balance of voltage and filament length. If the voltage dips or the filament is just a bit off, the infrared spectrum shifts. It’s a subtle change, but your bottles feel it. That’s why we stick with high-purity quartz glass. It lets the IR energy pass right through instead of the tube absorbing the heat itself. More energy goes into the PET, and less is wasted.
Swapping them out
We didn’t want you to have to rewire your entire oven just to get better heat. Our lamps are designed to be a direct swap. The length and diameter match your original housing exactly. Plus, we use standard R7s or SK15 connectors, so you just plug them in and get back to work. No modifications, no headaches. And for those annoying “hot spots”? We’ve got a trick. We apply a selective coating to the quartz to dampen the heat in the center and push more of it toward the ends. It flattens the thermal profile, giving you a much more consistent bottle.
A word of caution
High-wattage lamps are great because they increase heat density, which means you can speed up your cycle times. It’s a win for productivity. But there’s a catch. Running these tubes at full blast puts a lot more pressure on your oven’s cooling fans. If your ventilation can’t keep up with the extra heat, you might burn out your sockets prematurely. Keep a close eye on those lamp temperatures during the first 100 hours of break-in. Just a little bit of monitoring now saves a lot of downtime later.
